Overview

Where a facility already has 380 V three-phase mains, there is no need to put a frequency converter between the supply and the motor: I-380 is a control unit that directly drives 380 V three-phase industrial door motors (not inverter). That direct-drive structure makes I-380 simpler, more robust and more compact than FU. The three-button cabinet (Open green / Close green / Stop red mushroom) is mounted on the wall; inside the body are the 380 V mains input, motor output and safety/control terminals.

Soft start is not required in industrial sectional doors (panel weight is balanced by torsion springs); I-380 direct-drive is the correct combination for these applications. In HPVC doors, the FU inverter is mandatory because fabric protection is required.

Triple protection system

Phase sequence control: On wrong R-S-T phasing sequence, the warning LED flashes red; the system stops automatically. Correction = swapping any two phases in the field (no intervention from the board required).

Phase control: If any of the three phases is interrupted or the voltage between phases drops below 310 V, the system stops, the red LED illuminates continuously. This prevents the motor winding from being damaged by single-phase current.

Current protection trimpot: Fine tuning under site load; in the 0 – 100% range of the maximum current that can be drawn from the board. On overload the system shuts down the board within 2 seconds; should not be re-tried without resolving the problem in the field.

Internal 3-phase fuse: Separate fuse for each phase inside the body; final protection layer against unexpected currents sourced from the mains.

Important: A photocell is mandatory for automatic closing mode (trap safety risk).

Operating time programming

In motors with their own limit switch (e.g. the integrated magnetic sensor inside large industrial sectional doors), bringing an external limit cable to the control unit is expensive. I-380 offers a solution to this situation: the board learns the operating time and drives the motor for the same duration.

Programming procedure:

  1. Door in closed position, all DIP OFF.
  2. Press Program button 1× → red LED illuminates.
  3. Press Open button 1× → door opens.
  4. 3 s after the motor stops at its own switch, press Stop 1×.
  5. Set DIP 3 to ON → the board now operates within the programmed time.

When a new time is recorded, the previous one is erased.

As with the barrier products, the EMC and safety test regime of the r-tec control board family is based on the TS EN 61000 + TS EN 60204-1 standards. The detailed conformity PDF is in the technical file.

Field discipline

  • Cable cross-sections on the mushroom stop and direction contacts must comply with the PDF reference values (usually 1.5 mm² Cu).
  • Three-phase mains check must be done before installation; if there is no fluctuating installation below 310 V, I-380 experiences continuous stops.
  • After the current protection has triggered, the door’s moving parts, motor and motor connections should not be repeatedly started without being checked.

Installation and Commissioning

The I-380 three-phase control unit drives 380 V three-phase motors and includes current and phase protection; commissioning is done by setting the phase order and protection thresholds correctly. General flow:

  • Three-phase supply: The 380 V supply and motor leads are connected to the terminals; on phase loss the unit protects the motor, so the presence of all phases is verified.
  • Rotation direction: If the direction is reversed on an open command, it is corrected by swapping any two of the motor supply leads (with the power cut).
  • Current/protection setting: The current-protection threshold is set to the motor’s rated value; the trimpot direction is opposite to that of the G-24 board, and the setting follows the model guide.
  • Limits and test: Limits are defined at the open and closed ends and operation is verified over a few cycles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below we've compiled the most common questions and answers regarding this product.

  • On the I-380 unit the green LED is on but the system does not work at all?

    A common error is connecting the earth line instead of the supply neutral. The board is then powered and the green LED lights, but the system will not run. Use NEUTRAL — not earth — at the supply input; on a three-phase supply also check phase order and phase integrity. Connections must be made by an authorized person with the power off.

  • On the I-380 the green LED is on but the motor does not move — what should I check?

    First check the stop/safety LED; if it is off the safety chain is open: a stuck switch, the motor left in manual (crank), a crank shaft engaged, or thermal protection tripped — clear each. If the LEDs are normal but the motor hums, there may be a loose/detached motor output terminal or a lost phase; check the terminal and measure 380 V between the phases.
