When planning an industrial door investment, the first question is usually the same: “What will it cost?” There is no single list price for this, because every facility’s opening, usage and operating conditions differ. This guide explains the main factors that determine the cost of an industrial door solution — from a high-speed PVC door to a dock leveler.
The main cost factors
- Opening dimensions: The clear width and height directly affect both the amount of material and the required motor power. Wider openings need stronger hardware.
- Product type and panel: A high-speed PVC curtain door, a sectional sandwich-panel door or a dock leveler — each type involves a different structure and hardware class. The panel thickness and surface change the cost.
- Insulation needs: For high-insulation applications such as cold storage and climate separation, the panel and seal selection differ.
- Motor and automation: The r-tec motor and control-unit selection depends on the door weight, opening size and daily cycle count. Heavy use requires more durable hardware.
- Safety accessories: Add-ons such as photocells, signal lamps, edge safety and remote controls affect both safety and the total cost.
- Installation and site conditions: Whether the opening is ready, the installation height and the electrical infrastructure are taken into account in the technical assessment before quotation.
- Certification and standard requirements: Conformity with standards such as EN 13241-1 shapes the scope according to the documents the project requires.

What drives cost on a high-speed PVC door?
The largest item is the speed class. Without an inverter the door runs in the 0.65 – 0.70 m/s band; with one it reaches 1.5 m/s and the control unit becomes an FU rather than an I-380. That is not a single option but a decision that changes the character of the installation.
The second item is motor torque: the RAPID series is selected between 35 Nm and 180 Nm according to door size. On the structure, the roll type uses 80 × 80 mm aluminium uprights and the folding type 200 × 200 mm galvanised steel. On the curtain, the RAL selection, the size of any vision panel and the bottom seal arrangement change the total, as do the safety items: BREAK OUT bottom impact release and the extent of photocell cover.
What drives cost on a sectional door?
Dimensions and the resulting panel count are the starting point, but the real differences sit in three places. Lift type changes the drum and track group together; standard lift is the most economical arrangement, while high and vertical lift call for a different drum group. Panel thickness and insulation class govern in applications such as cold stores. The spring assembly and its cycle life deserve separate treatment, below.
On top of these come the RAL selection and single or double-sided finish, leaf options such as windows and a wicket door, the motor class and the extent of the safety equipment. Where the door width exceeds 5,100 mm, the panel joints require reinforcement profiles, support plates, double side hinges and long-shaft rollers — a cost step tied directly to size.
Cycle life writes into total cost, not the first price
The item most often skipped when comparing bids is spring cycle life. Torsion springs are supplied with a standard life of 15,000 cycles; 25,000, 50,000 and 100,000 cycle alternatives can be requested.
In concrete terms: at a facility running 40 cycles a day, 15,000 cycles corresponds to roughly a year and 100,000 to roughly seven. If you do not state your usage intensity in the specification or the enquiry, bids get priced against different spring classes and the cheapest bid becomes the shortest-lived one. The same logic applies on the motor side: cycle intensity sets the motor class, and a motor selected at the limit trips its thermal protection often.

The automation and loading side
In automation, motor selection starts from leaf weight and door type; a heavier leaf on the same opening moves you up a model. Supply follows: a 230 V single-phase and a 380 V three-phase installation differ in control board and cabling. On top come the safety items (photocell, flasher, edge protection), the access side (loop detector, keypad, plate recognition) and battery backup for power-cut scenarios. On barriers, boom length and LED bar selection are a separate item.
For loading systems the first item is capacity; the 6,000 kg dynamic and 9,000 kg static values are selected according to vehicle and forklift traffic. Platform size, whether the lip is hinged or telescopic, and the hydraulic unit and control arrangement follow. Where the pit is not ready on site, the construction work sits with the contractor as a separate item.
What to send when requesting a quotation
How quickly and how comparably a quotation comes back depends on how complete the information you send is:
Dimensions — internal sub-frame width and height; where no frame exists yet, the structural opening with its lintel and jamb allowances.
Headroom and side clearances — these values decide the lift type.
Usage profile — cycles at peak hour and the daily total; not an average.
Environment — cold store, food, external facade or dusty production each change the panel and seal selection.
Supply — whether 220 V single phase or 380 V three phase is available on site.
Documentation requirements — for a tender, the standards required and the scope of certification.
With these six in hand the quotation comes back in one round; without them it is prepared on assumptions and will not stand on the same ground as the other bids you are comparing.
