EV Charging in Facility Projects: Wallbox or Portable?

As electric vehicles multiply, “charging point in the car park” is becoming a standard line in commercial projects. In AC charging the core decision looks simple — fixed or portable? — but behind it sit questions of power, phase and management protocol. Let’s look through the two products of the r-tec EV charging portfolio.
The fixed point: WCU-22 Wallbox
The WCU-22 delivers a maximum of 22 kW from a 3-phase 400 VAC input; with its Type 2 connector and external 30 mA RCD protection, it is the fixed-infrastructure product of commercial car parks, office garages and plaza projects. The practical meaning of 22 kW: a typical battery with three-phase charging support fills in 3-4 hours — more than enough within a working day’s parking window.
The real value of fixed installation is permanence: the cabling is engineered once; the user arrives, plugs in and forgets.
The flexible answer: WCU-11 Portable
The WCU-11 is the side that goes to the socket. It delivers 11 kW (3-phase) through a CEE connection and 3.7 kW from a standard Schuko socket; the output is again Type 2. It positions itself in rented spaces where a fixed wallbox cannot be installed, on temporary sites, or as the backup unit that travels with the vehicle. The blue CEE 16 A socket in a workshop turns the portable unit into a serious charging point.
OCPP: The common language of charging
In multi-point projects, management matters as much as the device. OCPP (Open Charge Point Protocol) is the open standard through which a charging station talks to its back-end management platform — reservation, payment integration, remote start/stop and user identity all run over it. As a car-park operation grows, OCPP support becomes insurance against vendor lock-in.
Decision summary
In the end the split is clear: building permanent car-park infrastructure calls for the fixed wallbox; if the location is still uncertain or flexibility is the priority, the portable unit wins. In multi-point operations, the choice should be made together with the management platform strategy.
