A television’s box states which connections it does and does not have; you cannot expect a missing feature after the fact. Nobody buys the cheaper screen and then demands the flagship’s picture. In gate automation, however, that reasoning is breached every day — because the two most visible items on the label, voltage and kilograms, can make two entirely different products look like the same one.

What the label doesn’t say

A familiar scenario from the field: two sliding gate motors side by side. Both 24 V, both carrying the same weight class, one distinctly cheaper. Comparison over, decision made — right?

What the label doesn’t say is this: one of those motors was designed for a villa gate that opens perhaps ten times a day. In Europe this class of product is sold in DIY markets, and the box says so plainly: for residential use. The other was engineered for passages that work without pause through morning and evening traffic — the shared gate of a hundred and fifty, two hundred homes: its gearbox, thermal endurance and cycle tolerance are built for it. Same voltage, same kilograms — an entirely different job.

Fitting a residential-class product to a communal gate shows no symptom in the first week. The symptom arrives after the motor has shouldered several times its designed cycle count for a few months — usually at the busiest hour. By then the bill has grown to several times the original price gap: the replaced motor, the aggrieved residents, and the reputational fine written out to the whole sector as “so that’s what automation is like”.

The second hidden cost of cheap

The scenario has a sequel. When a product melts under a mismatched duty, you need a door to knock on. We have never forgotten an inventory count we once listened to in the field: in a company’s warehouse, a small “collection of failures” had accumulated — imported barriers of uncertain origin. When we asked why they were never returned, the answer was a single sentence: “There is nobody to return them to.” The cheapest label is the label with no service counterpart — and that collection was the inventory of where the price difference had gone.

Ask the gate, not the label

The first question of motor selection is not “how many volts, how many kilos?” but “how many times a day will this gate open, and for whom?” If the answer is a villa, the residential class is exactly right — the right product in the right place, worth every unit of its price. If the answer is a compound, a car park, a business entrance, the job moves to the heavy-duty class. The same voltage makes two products relatives; it does not make them the same class. The day you turn label-reading into gate-asking, the difference between cheap and economical becomes visible on its own.
