Sound in the Industrial Environment: The Invisible Cost of a Decibel

What the NORMDOCK noise and NORMTOR panel values actually describe: reading equipment specifications without confusing them with a facility's acoustic performance.

Noise requirements belong in a facility’s door and loading-equipment specification. Panel sound reduction, equipment operating noise and worker exposure are different measures and should not be compared as one number.

NORMTOR sectional door — a facility passage where noise is kept under control.

The equipment’s sound report card

Managing sound begins with equipment selection. A few examples, from our own product data:

  • The NORMDOCK hinged dock leveller specification states an operating sound level of 70 dB maximum in clause 3-4. This is a manufacturer specification value; it does not establish a conversation threshold, employees’ daily noise exposure or a guarantee against fatigue. Those questions require assessment under the actual operating conditions.
  • The NORMTOR industrial door specification lists R’w = 26 dB for its 40 mm sandwich panel in clause 2-11. This panel value is not a measured reduction for every complete installed door or the whole facility. Seals, openings and the installed configuration must also be considered before making a site-level acoustic claim.
  • For a garage motor, the drive mechanism also needs to be identified before discussing noise. The PULL1200/1200L product sheet describes a chain mechanism; it does not provide a measured chain-versus-belt comparison or a guarantee of silent operation. Acoustic suitability for a project with homes above must be checked for the proposed model and installation.

Silence is not a comfort; it is communication infrastructure

The first casualty of a noisy environment is speech. Instructions are repeated louder, the radio message is asked for a second time, the warning tone goes unnoticed. There is a reason occupational safety literature takes noise seriously: sound consumes the budget of attention. Quiet equipment is bandwidth cleared so that the announcement, the alarm and the human voice can be heard.

Specify the acoustic requirement

Transmission, rail alignment, spring balance and seals belong in operating-noise assessment. State the requirement with product and installation conditions at quotation. A panel figure does not establish measured facility noise; equipment noise and insulation are separate assessments.
