Overview

The dock shelter is applied to surround the trailer of the loading vehicle in order to protect the products being loaded and the personnel performing the loading from outside weather conditions. Before the vehicle approaches, it forms a semi-enclosed buffer zone that isolates the interior from outside weather — sealing the gap between the vehicle and the loading area like a gasket.

The NORMDOCK shelter is offered with a combination of PVC fabric compliant with DIN 53352 / 53356 / 75200 standards + galvanised steel skeleton + aluminium outer profile. Standard 3,400 × 3,450 × 620 mm; production up to 4,200 × 4,500 × 1,000 mm is possible for special projects.

Operating principle

A flexible PVC fabric + foam buffer is fitted over the steel or aluminium profile skeleton. As the vehicle approaches in reverse, the side and top panels of the shelter press in around the trailer; the product and personnel brought in are completely separated from the outside environment.

Standard sizes are produced according to truck and van beds; for special site requirements, project-based customisation is made. A custom colour production option is available according to the colour swatch.

DIN standards — PVC fabric quality

The NORMDOCK shelter fabric quality is certified by 3 German DIN standards:

  • DIN 53352 — Textile strength (DTEX yarn density measurement).
  • DIN 53356 — Tear + breaking strength tests.
  • DIN 75200 — Automotive interior flammability (fire safety).

These standards indicate that the fabric is used at automotive + heavy industry quality level.

Construction details

  • Outer surface — Special aluminium profile. Long life against corrosion + aesthetics.
  • Inner construction — Galvanised steel profile. Load carrying + structural stability.
  • All metal components — Galvanised (rust-preventing).
  • Corner joints — Special tenons. Interlocking joints instead of standard bolts.
  • White bands on the front surface — For the load vehicle to approach the shelter at night (visibility).
  • Rain gutter — Standard — rainwater accumulating on top of the shelter is drained through side channels.

Size flexibility

SizeStandardMaximum
Width3,400 mm4,200 mm
Height3,450 mm4,500 mm
Depth620 mm1,000 mm

Intermediate sizes can be project-based produced — during site survey, the trailer perimeter + site frame dimensions are taken.

Typical use

  • Cold storage loading points — Keeps temperature loss to a minimum (energy savings).
  • Food + pharmaceutical + beverage facility dispatch lines — Anti-static + stain-resistant fabric meets hygiene standards.
  • Automotive supplier loading docks — Spare parts are protected in rain.
  • External façade loading docks — Loading in open areas + indoor protection.
  • 24/7 loading operation — White bands provide night visibility.
  • HACCP / GMP mandatory hygiene control — Dust + insects + rain are kept outside.

Advantages

  • Hygiene protection — Keeps dust, insects, wind and rain out of the loading area.
  • Energy savings — Lowers cooling costs by minimising cold air loss. In cold storage applications it provides significant annual savings.
  • Flexible fit — Adapts to different vehicle heights and widths (flexible fabric).
  • System integration — Full loading line solution together with the NORMDOCK leveler.
  • Automotive-quality fabric — PVC with 3 standards including DIN 75200 flammability.
  • Colour choice — Standard black + optional colour swatch for corporate harmony.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below we've compiled the most common questions and answers regarding this product.

  • What is the difference between a dock shelter and a dock leveller, and are they used together?

A dock leveller bridges the height difference between the vehicle bed and the dock to create a passage, while a dock shelter surrounds the vehicle's trailer to form a semi-enclosed buffer zone that isolates the loading area from outside weather. The two systems complement each other — applied together with the NORMDOCK leveller, you obtain a complete loading line solution.

  • What are the standard dimensions of the shelter, and do you produce custom sizes?

The standard size is 3,400 × 3,450 × 620 mm, with production possible up to a maximum of 4,200 × 4,500 × 1,000 mm. Intermediate sizes can be produced on a project basis; during the site survey the trailer perimeter and site frame dimensions are taken so a solution suited to your vehicle type can be designed.

  • Which standards and strength values does the PVC fabric meet, and can it be used in hygienic facilities?

The fabric complies with the DIN 53352, DIN 53356 and DIN 75200 standards, with a 3 mm thickness, 900 g/m² density and 1,100 DTEX value. It offers 2,188 N tear resistance and 2,300 N/5 cm breaking strength. Thanks to its anti-static, stain-resistant and abrasion-resistant structure, you can readily use it in food, pharmaceutical and beverage facilities and on lines requiring HACCP/GMP hygiene control.

  • In which colours is the shelter offered, and is it durable against outdoor conditions?

The standard colour is black; a custom colour suited to your corporate identity can be produced via the optional colour swatch. The combination of a galvanised steel inner construction, aluminium outer profile and PVC fabric is durable against all weather conditions including rain, snow, wind and sun; the rain gutter is standard and the white bands on the front surface provide night visibility.
