NORMTOR Sectional Door Selection Guide — Industrial, Garage and Full Vision

A practical guide for engineers and project managers — sectional door selection criteria from panel thickness to certification and track to motor (NORMTOR).

NORMTOR Sectional Door Selection Guide — Industrial, Garage and Full Vision

If a sectional door is being planned for an industrial facility, the decision does not consist only of size and colour. The density of the panel core, the heat transfer coefficient, track type, motor torque and conformity certificates affect everything from field safety to the energy bill, from the tender file to the post-sales service period.

In this article, through our own NORMTOR product family, we address the six critical questions to be asked in sectional door selection. The target audience is the engineer writing specifications, the project manager and the technical procurement officer.

1. Which panel thickness, which insulation requirement?

In the sectional door market in Turkey, the 40 mm sandwich panel has become standard for industrial applications. However, this figure alone is not sufficient; the real determinant is the panel’s internal core density and the thermal performance that comes with it.

The panel structure in our NORMTOR products is as follows:

  • 40 mm thickness, 40 kg/m³ polyurethane core
  • U = 0.604 W/m²K (heat transfer coefficient)
  • R’w = 26 dB (sound transmission)
  • Hot-dip galvanised + polyester coated outer surface

What do these values mean? You can predict the heat loss through the door surface for a cooled warehouse; the mechanical engineering designer can do the correct BTU calculation. Acoustically, 26 dB provides a clear comfort difference between a noisy production line and an office intermediate corridor.

If only “40 mm panel” is written in the specification, the 25% density difference between 32 kg/m³ and 40 kg/m³ filled panels on the market may be overlooked at the audit stage. The expression “40 kg/m³ PU filling” must absolutely be present in your NORMTOR specification.

2. Which track type matches the architecture?

The sectional door track determines the path the door follows while opening. Wrong selection creates conflict with ceiling installations, difficulty in installation/removal, and unnecessary loss of space. 4 different tracks are offered in our NORMTOR industrial series:

Track typeCeiling heightTypical use
StandardHighIndustrial warehouse, logistics dock
VerticalVery highAutomotive repair, heavy machinery
High-liftInsufficient ceilingTight production line
FHL pitchPitched ceilingHangar, workshop

After the ceiling-installation-lighting conflict check is done through the architectural project, the track type should be finalised; otherwise, when the door arrives, intervention to the existing ceiling installations is required.

3. Maximum opening and usage intensity

The NORMTOR industrial reference maximum size is 8,000 × 7,000 mm. For openings exceeding this limit, the hangar series (side-folding or two-leaf side-sliding) should be considered.

In addition to the opening, the daily cycle count is critical:

  • Low frequency (5-20 openings per day): standard torsion spring, garage sectional is sufficient
  • Medium frequency (20-50 per day): industrial series + standard motor
  • High frequency (50+ per day): industrial series + industrial motor (220-K, 380A) or hangar/HPVC alternative should be considered

A 100,000 cycle torsion spring option is available in the residential/garage series; in industrial use the 100,000 cycle may be consumed within 2-3 years. In these cases, a maintenance programme contract should be included in the project from the start.

4. Which certificates are mandatory, which are preferred?

For a public-sector project in Turkey, the Domestic Product Certificate; for EU tenders, the EN 13241-1 + CE Declaration; for the Eurasian market, the EAC certificates are mandatory. Our NORMTOR product family carries all four core certificates:

  • EN 13241-1 — SP Sweden / TÜV NORD CERT, Class 2/3 performance (since 2013, the first CE-certified domestic-panel sectional door in Turkey)
  • CE Declaration of Conformity — Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, Construction Products Regulation 305/2011
  • EAC — Eurasian Economic Union (Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan)
  • Domestic Product Certificate64.57% domestic contribution rate (renewed annually, public tender incentive)

When writing a specification, the name of the certificate holder company should also be written next to the certificate name; otherwise, the term “CE-certified door” in the contract could refer to a generic product.

5. Three main series — which one for which application?

There are three different product families under the NORMTOR umbrella:

Industrial — industrial facility, logistics

40 mm panel, 4 track types, max. 8,000 × 7,000 mm. The main line for production facilities, logistics warehouse docks and workshop entrances. Catalogued as standard in 5 RAL colours.

Garage — residential and villa

4 panel heights (460/500/560/610 mm), 5 surface patterns (stucco, cassette, woodgrain, smooth, ribbed), –30 °C flexible rubber seal, 100,000 cycle torsion spring option. EN class 3 wind, class 2 water tightness. Plexiglass window and service door can be added.

Full Vision — showroom, display

Aluminium 1.3 mm frame + 3 mm plexiglass infill, max. 5,000 × 6,000 mm. Transparent structure; for car galleries, retail displays and open-front café applications. The double-skin variant is available in the 2024 price list.

6. Motor and control selection

The automation side is not independent while the door is being developed; it should be evaluated within the same package.

  • Light industrial: 220-K motor (220 V) + standard board
  • Three-phase industrial: 380A motor (380 V) + I-380 three-phase direct drive
  • HPVC integration (door side NORMTOR + internal door HPVC): FU inverter board
  • Premium industrial + remote monitoring: GIGA Sedo (Sommer Antriebs OEM, LCD + RS485, multi-door parallel control)

All motor and board families are produced under our r-tec brand; the door + motor + control single-supplier advantage provides technical consistency to the project from the start.

Specification checklist

When writing the NORMTOR sectional door specification, the following eight headings must absolutely be addressed:

  1. Panel: 40 mm sandwich, 40 kg/m³ PU filling, U = 0.604 W/m²K
  2. Surface: hot-dip galvanised + polyester coating, RAL colour code
  3. Track type: standard / vertical / high-lift / FHL (according to architecture)
  4. Max. size: opening × height (reference 8,000 × 7,000 mm)
  5. Certification: EN 13241-1 Class 2/3 + CE Declaration + EAC + Domestic Product
  6. Motor: r-tec series, according to opening size and three-phase/single-phase requirement
  7. Accessories: plexiglass window, service door, photocell, flasher
  8. Warranty: torsion spring cycle count, maintenance scope, post-sales service region
